Lunch at Thornbridge Hall

I first encountered Marjorie early in 1971 when out two families were required to attend formal Sunday lunches with the then Principal Miss Whittaker, a formidable woman recently returned from setting up teacher education in Malawi who was used to colonial rule and asserted it in the English context. Grown men would wilt in her presence. This experience  created a bond between the two families and a friendship based on more liberal attitudes that endured for many years. Marjorie was distinguished by her considerable intelligence, generosity, warmth and modesty. I remember her with great fondness and celebrate her long and much valued life. I am sure she will be greatly missed by the family she loved.
